Havana rewards even two or three nights — Habana Vieja and Vedado are the classic bases. Cienfuegos is compact and elegant on the south coast; Varadero adds a beach to a city break. Pick one, stay central, and walk.

The case for a city apartment
A few nights in a Cuban city are better spent in a neighbourhood than behind a resort gate. A central apartment or casa particular drops you into the rhythm of the place — the bakery on the corner, the paladar two doors down, the son drifting out of a bar at dusk. You get a host's local knowledge, a fraction of a hotel's price, and the sense of living in the city rather than visiting it.
Where a short trip pays off
Havana is the obvious one: even two or three nights among the plazas of Habana Vieja or the avenues of Vedado are worth the trip. But the model works across the island — compact, elegant Cienfuegos on the south coast; Santa Clara or Camagüey inland; Santiago in the east. The rule is the same everywhere: stay central, and the city opens up on foot.
Neighbourhoods that reward walking
In Havana, Habana Vieja puts the restored old town at your door while Vedado offers a leafier, more residential base within walking distance of the Malecón. Trinidad's cobbled centre is walkable end to end; Cienfuegos radiates from a single graceful square. Choosing the right barrio matters more than the room itself — it decides whether dinner and the sights are a stroll or a taxi away.
The practical short-stay checklist
Book the first night ahead in high season, bring cash for the whole trip, and confirm price and currency with the host directly — US cards usually fail and there is no front desk to fall back on. Bring your passport for the guest register, and pack light: Cuban city streets and colonial staircases were not built for large wheeled cases.
Nights out from a city base
A city stay comes alive after dark, and Cuban cities do evenings well. Havana runs from the rooftop bars of the old town to the Fábrica de Arte Cubano, a converted oil factory that is gallery, cinema and club at once; Santiago and Trinidad send live son and trova out of their music houses onto the steps; even small cities keep a Casa de la Trova. Staying central means you walk home from all of it. Ask your host where the night is that week — the good spots rotate, and locals always know.
Getting between the cities
City-hopping in Cuba is easy once you know the options. The Víazul coach network links Havana, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and the rest on cheap, air-conditioned runs — book ahead in high season. Faster and more flexible are the shared taxis colectivos, old American cars running fixed inter-city routes that often cost little more than the bus when split between passengers, and door-to-door private taxis your host can arrange in minutes. Distances are real — Havana to Cienfuegos is about four hours — so a short city trip is best built around two or three bases, not a dash between many.
